Sibling support

It’s hard to understand the impact neonatal care can have on siblings, especially very small children, as even parents sometimes don’t fully understand their situation.

Our aim is to support the whole family, and we do our best to offer support to families with siblings.

Neonatal care impacts the whole family, and siblings can find their world is turned upside down overnight.

Parents do their best to keep things as normal as possible, but it can be hard. They often have to rely on family and friends for childcare and support.

Siblings may have to spend additional time at nursery or school to allow parents time to be on the neonatal unit. It can be a scary and confusing time for siblings, especially when they have less time to spend with their mum and dad.

Older children are often generally more aware of the seriousness of the situation. There is sometimes the fear that they understand a little too much and they can become quite anxious.

Support for siblings

Specialist counselling services are available for children and if you’re worried about your child, please speak to their teacher at school or your GP.

Siblings are also invited to attend our age-appropriate community groups and sessions. Our Sing ‘n’ Shake sessions, in particular, are perfect for siblings under five.

Our peer supporters, both on the units and at community groups, will happily support siblings via play and reading activities. And these can also be included in home visits where appropriate.
